The New Year’s Eve Mystery Revealed

    January 4, 2020 / 1 Comment

We set our New Year's resolutions for hopes of better us and better tomorrow. It does not matter that by the 10th of January we forget them, because at that moment, all that matters is that we realize what we want to be, where we want to be, how we want to be. And when the clock ticks midnight, a certain warmth in our souls whispers that maybe - just maybe - these dreams can become part of our reality in the upcoming year.

The Taj Mahal – a masterpiece that gives shape to love

    December 28, 2019 / 0 Comments

The stillness of the vast whiteness is interrupted only by carved in floral patterns from semi-precious stones. They are so delicate, yet so sophisticated and beautiful. I like to think that his is how Shah Jahan perceived Mumtaz. No human is one-sided or one-colored, but we need to get close enough to them and pay attention to the details in order to cherish them in all of their beauty and existence.

Plastic-free month: how can you do it?

    December 3, 2019 / 2 Comments

Felix and I have had the idea to have a plastic-free month for a while now. We finally made our wish come true this November. We focused especially on avoiding any plastic food packaging, but we also did not purchase plastic-packed cosmetics or decoration. Living in this way required a lot of adjustments, but the more we paid attention to it, the easier it got. In this post, I will share some tips which helped us keep our promise. I know very well that this might not be possible for everyone, but keep in mind that every small action matters. Thus, you can decide what fits your lifestyle and try…

    Looking for work?
Here are 10 points worth considering

    November 5, 2019 / 2 Comments

I have been working on my PhD for a year now! - I say as I raise my cup of tea to make a toast for the anniversary. Usually, this would be a glass of wine, but since tomorrow I hit the lab at 7am, I think the wine will have to wait. That being said, and without further due, let me get down to the point. What did I learn during this year? And what should you pay attention to when choosing your next job?

“If we are to survive, we must have ideas, vision, and courage. These things are rarely produced by committees. Everything that matters in our intellectual and moral life begins with an individual confronting his own mind and conscience in a room by himself.” ― Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.

    Nobel Prize in Physics 2019
Part II: Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz

    October 17, 2019 / 2 Comments

We have always been and always will be curious whether there are Earth-like planets somewhere in our Universe and whether there is life as we know it on these other planets as well. We have always been fascinated by the starry sky and have invested lots of time (later, also money) to investigate the frontiers that lie beyond our imagination. With the discovery of the first exoplanet - named 51 Pegasi b, which Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz announced on a conference in Florence, Italy, on 6th of October, 1995, the astrophysical revolution was born.

    Part I: James Peebles

The foundations of physical cosmology were set in the 1960s and by the mid of the 1980s, these foundations gloriously transformed into a palace of knowledge for our Universe. Large portion of the relevant theories were developed by James Peebles who, with his creative and bold questioning of the Universe’s structure and history, set the cosmological field on the Physics map and paved the way for a new world of knowledge, freed from the chains of legends and myths. This year, for his life-long dedication and “contribution to our understanding of the evolution of the universe”, James Peebles is awarded one half of the Nobel Prize in Physics.

The beauty, philosophy, and spirituality behind the Chinese ink wash painting

    October 8, 2019 / 2 Comments

With its large palette of ink strokes, thickness of lines, and large empty spaces, ink wash painting focused on catching the "spirit" or the "essence" of the portrayed object, rather than its exact form. The literati were very often traditional scholars and alongside their painting skills, they also learned extensively about poetry, music and musical instruments, calligraphy, strategy games, and seal art. Thus, for them ink wash painting was more than just a painting form. It was in a way a form of a philosophy, of spirituality; it was an artistic era in which the artist was showing his admiration and modest understanding of the universe...
